Eris Property Group:

Staying Ahead in the Student
Housing Sector with PSHA

Eris Property Group, a company known for providing strategically located housing that combines innovative design with exceptional build quality, joined the PSHA in 2020.

According to Johan Janse van Vuuren, Executive Head of Student Accommodation at Eris, becoming a PSHA member has played a key role in helping the company stay informed and agile in a rapidly evolving environment.

“The student accommodation landscape can be unpredictable, heavily influenced by government policies and NSFAS decisions,” he explains. “Being part of the PSHA has had a tangible, positive impact. It keeps us in the loop. While the PSHA may not always have immediate answers, it’s often the first to access critical updates – like NSFAS rates or internal developments at NSFAS and the Department of Higher Education and Training. That insight enables us, collectively, to make faster decisions and adapt our strategies as needed.”

He adds that PSHA membership has also deepened Eris’s understanding of sector dynamics. “It has helped us better grasp the pressures and priorities of government, allowing us to refine our accommodation offerings to meet the expectations of both public institutions and students. It ensures we design systems that operate efficiently and align with industry standards.”

Respublica:

The Power of Collective Advocacy

Respublica is a founding member of the PSHA. Despite some challenges in the student accommodation sector, the company benefits from being part of this formidable lobby organisation. Craig McMurray, Respublica Chief Executive Officer, sums up the positive experience of being part of the PSHA family.

  • “It has given Respublica a voice in shaping regulations and student housing policies.”
  • “It has helped avoid the company brand being at the forefront of confrontation with stakeholders and allowed for a larger collective body to fight for advocacy efforts that protect and promote our interests, ensuring that our concerns are heard by all stakeholders at a national level.”
  • “Being a member has given the company the opportunity to benchmark our standards against the industry best practices has revealed areas for improvement.”

On specific resources offered by the PSHA that have been most valuable to his company, McMurray offers the following:

  • “Policy advocacy: The ability of PSHA to lobby on behalf of members to shape policy that supports this industry specifically NSFAS and certain universities.”
  • “The ability to participate and contribute to industry projects, such as developing the national accreditation and grading tool, is of great value to Respublica and the industry.
  • “The sharing of industry research reports on pricing, building costs and general operational standards has provided a valuable benchmark for Respublica.”
