of Student Success.

Credibility & Governance

The Private Student Housing Association (PSHA) is an independent non-profit body established to professionalize the private student housing sector. Our role is to ensure that student accommodation is more than just a room—it is a catalyst for academic excellence.

At the heart of the Association is our effort to offer a solution to the desperate shortage of student housing in the country. We aim to achieve this by formalising the industry, lobbying for effective solutions to challenges in the sector and improving standards of accommodation offerings and the credibility of the sector and its members.

The PSHA currently represents private student housing providers providers of nearly 50 000 beds across South Africa.

Key stakeholders in the PSHA include developers, owners, operators, students, tertiary institutions, the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET), the National Treasury, the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) and various municipalities across the country. We aim to maintain a strong relationship with the various key stakeholders to ensure transparent and meaningful communication.

Transparency is at our core.

Our Board of Directors and specialised committees ensure PSHA operates with integrity, focusing on:

We believe that there is a need for a standard accommodation grading system agreed to by all stakeholders and aligned to these Norms and Standards and the accreditation policies of tertiary institutions.
